Again, that's this Friday, 8 June, at 8 PM
in UC Riverside's University Theatre.

Javanese workshops and wayang in Kentucky
Gamelan: It's not just for city- and campus-dwellers!
Full info at Appalshop's website
Appalshop, the media, arts, and education center in Whitesburg, Kentucky, will be host to thirteen Indonesians from Jakarta and Yogyakarta as part of a multi-phased, international exchange project made possible by a grant from the US Department of State, Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs. The project pairs a growing network of Indonesian media organizations with Appalshop as an established US nonprofit with a commitment to cross cultural exchange in a process of shared learning.
From April 20 – May 3, 2007, a range of activities will include workshops and collaborative production with Appalshop’s youth media program AMI, the Appalachian Media Institute; reciprocal screenings and discussions of films and videos; as well as exposure to the region’s history, culture, and social issues through community activities and conversations as part of a person-to-person exchange approach. The program will also feature Javanese wayang (puppet) theater performed by master artists in public performances of this ancient tradition.
Appalshop’s Indonesian partnering organization is Boemboe, founded in 2003 as a meeting point for the development, promotion, and distribution of Indonesian short film. Participants were selected from the following cooperating organizations: Etnoreflika, InDocs, Kampung Halaman, Komunitas Dokumenter, and Tembi.

NYC: Balinese Gamelan on February 17
For anyone in the NYC metropolitan area:
Gamelan Dharma Swara, NYC's Balinese gamelan, will present RWA BHINEDA: The Sacred Balance, at 7:30 pm on February 17 2007 at Peter Norton Symphony Space (Broadway at 95th St).
Nearly fifteen dancers in traditional Balinese performance costume, backed by twenty-five musicians performing on bronze gamelan instruments, will appear onstage to bring Bali’s tradition of rwa bhineda to the American audience. The performance features guest artistic director I Wayan Dibia, former head of Bali's National Arts Institute (ISI), as the Barong.
The term ‘rwa bhineda’ refers to the Balinese Hindu religion's prolific use of music, dance, and drama as sacred mediators that negotiate harmony between the forces of good and evil. In the performance, these forces are personified by two brothers – one mild-mannered, one tough and coarse – who receive nearly untouchable powers from heaven. But when beautiful angels ignite their passions, jealousy transforms them into the gruesome witch Rangda and the Barong protector dragon, locked in a fight to the death.

semara dana workshop/concert at the university of richmond
is anyone else going to this
? i am going to try to make it. some other folks from gamelan mitra kusuma will probably be there, too.
gamelan semara dana is the newest style of balinese gamelan, similar in style to gong kebyar, but with seven pelog
tones instead of five, like semar pegulingan. i have never seen one before!

. we'll be playing a saturday evening show and a sunday matinee. please pass this info on to any gamelan types in the baltimore-dc area!

upcoming gamelan gong kebyar performances in maryland
two balinese gamelan shows coming up:
this thursday, may 4 at 8 PM
the university of maryland's student gamelan, gamelan saraswati, under the direction of i nyoman suadin
kay theatre, clarice smith performing arts center
FREE and open to the public!
information and directions here
i started out playing with this group and i was with them for about three years, during which i also joined gamelan mitra kusuma. i have to miss this performance because of a work event, but i wish i could be there!
also, gamelan mitra kusuma
will be returning to the creative alliance
in baltimore in june for the third year in a row. there will be two shows; a saturday evening and a sunday matinee.
information and online ticket purchase are here
at our largest, we are a 25-member gamelan gong kebyar, but our membership is currently at a low, so we've had to temporarily cut out some of the gong kebyar instruments and adjust our repertoire. as a result, most of the pieces we're preparing for the creative alliance are pelegongan-style.

update on wayang kulit in baltimore
more details have surfaced! we have flyers for our wayang kulit in black and white
also, the 14karat cabaret
has updated their website with the usual rambly, misspelled information we in baltimore have come to know and love.
apparently there will also be a performance on something called a chromaccord
. i am intrigued.
anyway, see the flyers for more information, but the main update is that the show is at 9:30 (doors at 9) and it's $6 at the door. not bad for wayang kulit and chromaccord all in one night!
ETA: there is no date on those flyers. whoops! the date is friday, march 10. i'm going to ask my friend who made them if he can fix it.
ETA part 2: flyers have been fixed!

selected members will perform our wayang kulit, arjuna tapa
(the trial of arjuna). our director, i nyoman suadin, will be the dalang, accompanied by four GMK members on gender wayang.
i'm not sure about ticket prices yet, but i don't think it will be very much. i'll make another post once the date gets closer.
friday, march 17, 8pmthe embassy of indonesia
in washington, dc
the gong kebyar will present a full-length concert of balinese music and dance as part of the embassy series
. the featured guest dancer will be i gusti ngurah kertayuda, cultural education director at the indonesian consulate general in chicago
, and an old friend of nyoman's from kerambitan, his home village in bali. indonesian food will follow the program.
tickets are $75 - this concert is a benefit for tsunami relief.
that's it for now - i'll keep you posted on our upcoming (and hopefully cheaper!) performances in may and june. there will likely be one or two in the dc area in may for asian pacific heritage month, and a two-night engagement at the creative alliance
in baltimore in the late spring.
ETA: we will also be performing our wayang on sunday, april 9 at swarthmore college in pennsylvania, in collaboration with swarthmore's gamelan semara santi

Ibu Sri S. Kuhns, longtime member of the Javanese Gamelan Ensemble of the Indonesian Embassy, in Washington, DC, was killed yesterday morning, apparently by a hit-and-run driver.
Bu Sri was a wonderful crazy silly person, always laughing, remarkably generous with her time and energy. She was our regular gong/kempul player, taught Bahasa Indonesia, worked for Voice of America. She wanted to take our group to Indonesia.
There will probably be some sort of memorial for her, but I haven’t heard any of the details yet.
Don’t know what else to say...
